Burkina Faso’s Military Foils Coup Attempt: 4 Arrested, 2 on the Run

Burkina Faso’s intelligence and security services have successfully thwarted a coup attempt against the country’s military rulers, as announced by authorities in this West African nation.

The military rulers of Burkina Faso revealed on Wednesday that a group of army officers and others had conspired to seize power, potentially plunging the nation into “chaos.”

In a concise statement, Rimtalba Jean Emmanuel Ouedraogo, a spokesperson for the ruling military, stated, “Officers and other individuals allegedly involved in this destabilization attempt have been apprehended, and efforts are underway to locate others.”

According to the statement, the latest coup attempt occurred on Tuesday.

The military government has pledged to fully investigate this plot and expressed regret that officers, who had taken an oath to defend their homeland, engaged in such activities.

Subsequently, the country’s military prosecutor confirmed that four individuals had been arrested, while two remained at large. An investigation has been initiated based on “credible allegations of a conspiracy against state security involving officers,” as stated by the prosecutor.

Earlier this month, the military prosecutor reported the arrest and charges of three soldiers for plotting against the ruling military government led by Captain Ibrahim Traore, who assumed power in September 2022, eight months after a previous military coup ousted the democratically elected President Roch Marc Kabore.
