ANC Expel councilor receiving salary while in prison awaiting trial for murder

Ngiba, a senior member of the ANC in eThekwini, previously held the position of ward councillor for ward 101, encompassing the Cato Manor informal settlement and parts of Mayville. He is currently facing trial for the murder of ward councillor candidate Siyabonga Mkhize, who tragically lost his life in October 2021.

Earlier this year, opposition parties voiced concerns regarding Ngiba’s continued receipt of a salary while incarcerated. EThekwini Municipality Speaker Thabani Nyawose announced during the council meeting on Thursday that the MEC for Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Bongi Sithole Moloi, had upheld the decision to expel Ngiba. Consequently, Ngiba was removed from his position, and a vacancy will be declared with the Electoral Commission of South Africa.

This development follows the council’s determination in June that Ngiba had violated the code of conduct by missing three consecutive meetings without providing an explanation. Subsequently, the council recommended his removal.

As reported by The Mercury at the time, Nyawose mentioned that the City had previously notified Ngiba about his breach of the councillor code of conduct but had not received a response.
