Fire Incident at Kwara Poly: Seven Students Injured, Properties Worth Millions Lost

In a distressing event at Destiny Villa, Dola Abinbola Street, Elekoyangan area in Ilorin East local government area, a fire outbreak near a student hostel at Kwara State Polytechnic has left seven students injured. The incident, which occurred late Saturday, also involved a gas attendant at a nearby gas refilling shop.

Hakeem Adekunle, Head of Department (HOD) Media and Publicity for the State Fire Service, conveyed the details on behalf of Director Prince Falade John. The fire was triggered when a gas attendant was refilling a cylinder positioned several meters above ground level. The cylinder fell and exploded, exacerbating the fire and causing injuries to seven students and the gas attendant.

Upon receiving the report, the fire service promptly responded to the scene, finding a building with 17 self-contained rooms fully ablaze. Four rooms were affected, and eight individuals sustained injuries, including the students.

The estimated loss of properties in the fire is valued at N14.6 million, while N72.2 million worth of property was saved. Director Falade dispatched his team to check on the affected students and emphasized the importance of prioritizing safety measures to prevent future fire disasters.

This incident serves as a reminder of the critical need for vigilance and adherence to safety protocols, particularly in environments where potential hazards, like gas refilling shops, pose risks to lives and properties.
