US Court Mandates Release of Tinubu’s Academic Records by Chicago State University

In the Presidency, concerns are growing as Justice Nancy Maldonado of the United States (US) court for the Northern District of Illinois in Chicago has issued a stern warning. She declared that any further requests for a stay of execution concerning the court’s order to release all documents related to Nigeria’s President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s academic records at Chicago State University (CSU) will not be entertained. President Tinubu has been cautioned against approaching the court for such requests.

This warning came on the same day she affirmed the judgment by Judge Jeffrey T. Gilbert, Magistrate of the Northern District of Illinois in Chicago, who had previously ordered CSU to release President Tinubu’s academic records by Monday, October 2, 2023. This development marks a significant victory for Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2023 election. The judge specifically mentioned that all relevant and non-privileged documents, including Tinubu’s admission records, transcripts, and any other documents related to his education at CSU, should be released.

Former Vice President Atiku had initiated a lawsuit in the US court to compel CSU to release Tinubu’s academic records. He argued that these records were necessary for his case in Nigeria, where he is contesting Tinubu’s victory in the 2023 presidential election. The case has now progressed to the Supreme Court after starting at the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal (PEPT), which initially dismissed it for lacking merit.
